Mentoring Training Needs: It is critical for mentors to learn about their roles if they are to be successful mentors to early career teachers. Odell (1990) identified specific skills that are essential to the success of the mentor. The following list identifies Odell's mentor related skills:
  • understanding of the purpose of the mentor program
  • understanding of the district philosophy and priorities
  • understanding of district and school policies
  • familiarity with the stages of teacher development
  • familiarity with the needs of early career teachers
  • experience in clinical supervision, observation, and conferencing
  • understanding of reflective practices
